Convective Heat Transfer in Vertical Annular Channels

Abstract

Measurements of wall temperature and heat transfer coefficient along vertical, open ended concentric and eccentric annular channels with the inner or outer wall heated for the forced convective heat transfer regime are reported and compared to measurements in the same apparatus with both walls heated and to correlations from the literature. Results of numerical simulations of natural heat convection in the same channels with three wall heating conditions are also presented; they show that the maximum fluid velocity in a highly eccentric case was at a location intermediate between the narrow and wide gaps, whereas the minimum fluid temperature occurred near the middle of the wide gap.
