Abstract

In this paper we present a generic framework to determine the optimal alloying element and heat treatment conditions to obtain steels with desired material properties. For this, we present a heuristic based search algorithm designed on the principles of micro-genetic algorithm that is particularly suited to perform a fast global search on a multi-dimensional search space. In this work, the search space is a combination of 7 alloying elements and heat treatment conditions. The algorithm is equipped with a reduced order hardness model to evaluate the quality of the alloying elements and heat treatment combination. This framework is tested for 3 different evaluation functions to highlight the importance of the formulation of this function in the search process.
